From a Yurt to Garden of the Gods

Outside Salida, Colorado state highway 50 descends into Bighorn Sheep Canyon. There it follows the path of the Arkansas River, which, at this time of the year, is a white water rafting destination. It is not designated as a "scenic highway," but it is one.

When we started this trip, I thought we were going to take the Phantom Canyon road from Canon City to Cripple Creek, but the women who worked at the Tourist Information Center in Canon City gave me a guidebook recommending the road to four-wheel-drive vehicles. They also told me that because there had been a lot of rain lately, the road was gravel and not maintained, and they recommended that we take the High Park Road instead. So we did. It's a designated scenic drive through alpine meadows, and though it wasn't as dramatic as Bighorn Sheep Canyon, it was Michelle's favorite drive of the trip.

As we descended into Colorado Springs, digital signboards warned of flash floods and added "Travel not advised." We moved forward anyway, though, and by the time we started our walk through the Garden of the Gods, the rain was all behind us.

Tyler photo-bombed this family portrait. His family got to the Garden about the same time we did.

things steve said on the way to this place: "look at this place!", "this is not even a scenic route!", "this place is amazing", "Look a that rock", "are you guys looking at this?"
I especially loved watching the wild Arkansas river.
