This Thursday: Nina debuts in "A Girl from Anatevka." After learning about matchmakers from the older girls in her small hometown, an eight-year-old Jewish girl from Anatevka joins friends chasing some of the still available village boys. But the fun comes to an end when the czar forces all the village's Jews to sell their property and move away.
Emilio’s babysitter Emily told me this story last week and my love for the universe compels me to pass it on:
Her roommate’s sister was house-sitting for someone in Washington, D.C. and came back to the house one afternoon to find that the family’s dog had died.
When she called the vet, she was told that she would have to bring the dog into the clinic if she wanted to find out why it had died so suddenly. Not having a car, she had no recourse but to put the 50-pound dog into her suitcase, which she then took with her to the subway.
On the subway, a man who had noticed how heavy the suitcase was asked her what she was carrying in it. Not wanting to reveal the suitcase’s real contents, she said the first thing that popped into her head: “my stereo.”
Thereupon, the man punched her in the stomach, grabbed the suitcase and ran away.
