Mari and I are up at 8-ish. Mari starts a laundry and then heads to the Abuelos’ room for breakfast. Nina gets up at 9:30, and Emilio gets up a little later. I hang up clothes to dry. Pablo sleeps in until after 11. We take a longish walk to a bus stop on the Alameda Principal, where we go on a 10-minute bus ride to La Playa de la Caleta. It’s cloudy at 12-something and not hot.
We park under umbrella shades, and the kids get into the cold water.
Mari eventually joins them while Jaime and Maria Rosa and I hang out on lounge chairs.
Eventually, the kids get out of the water and play on a small zip line on the beach.
Our beach lunch features tortilla española, hummus, papas, tomates, and panes. Nina enjoys “triangulitos de maiz” with guacamole.
We stay at the beach until 5:30.
On our way back to the apartment, we wander into a wedding celebration at the Parroquia de los Santos Martires Ciriaco y Paula.
The church, which we walked by many times without noticing, is one of four churches established by los reyes Católicos, Fernando and Isabel, inside the walled perimeter of the city after their soldiers kicked the Muslims out of the cityin 1487.
Back at the apartment, Mari supervises showers, while I go with Maria Rosa and Jaime to the supermarket. On our return, we compel the kids to join us on a shopping run to the panaderia, the pharmacy, and the shoe store (Emilio and Pablo need flip flops). Emilio also gets Converse knock-offs to replace his worn out tennis shoes.
Shade canopies and street musicians make the pedestrian area of the city center a great place for walks.
I don’t remember what this religions procession was commemorating.
Back at the apartment, I cut carrots while Maria Rosa and Maria Jose cook pasta and broccoli. After supper, we go out again for ice cream and don’t get home until 11. Maria Jose, Maria Rosa, and Emilio play Desesperado, and we get to bed after midnight.
