There and Back Again with Nina

Nina and I finished reading The Hobbit tonight.

Having seen the first two extended-edition installments of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy on DVD a couple of weeks ago, we are now counting down the days--twelve to go now--until we will join the rest of the family at the Ada Cinemark to catch the final installment.

I moved here on December 3rd, 1975. I was eight. The house didn't have a second floor when we lived there. We had a porch swing, though. When I walked home from Daggett Elementary one day, Mom and Dad were sitting on it with a letter informing us that my test scores had earned me an invitation to a magnet school, where I could take foreign language classes (I chose French over Spanish). I threw my orange Nerf football onto that roof a lot. Aunt Evie once fell backwards down the stairs off the porch. As she fell, she reached out to me. Santa brought "Pong" to this house. He also brought me my first ten-speed. The neighbors across the street had chihuahas that sometimes chased me. John Dan picked me up here once to take me to see "King Kong."I saw the Cowboys win Super Bowl XII here. After the game, we watched The Sound of Music. Mom made nachos. When we lived here, I got my first record--"Goofy Greats"--and my second "The Beatles Greatest Hits, 1962-1966" (a.k.a. "The Red Album"). I got the game "Paydirt" for my 9th birthday, and it quickly became a favorite. I was living in this house when I started taking piano lessons. It was also here that I read Sounder, The Lou Gehrig Story, and The Chronicles of Narnia. We lived here when I went to overnight summer camp for the first time. And I was walking home to this house in January 1976, when Grandmom picked me up in her Plymouth station wagon and gave me the news that PawPaw had died of a heart attack.

We moved again in May 1977.

The 8-3 Romo-led Cowboys (DeMarco Murray, Dez Bryant) laid a Thanksgiving egg for Mark Sanchez and Philly, allowing the Iggs to take control of the division.

The #5-ranked, 9-1 Trevone-Boykin Frogs cheered us up by ribbting all over Texas, 48-10 at Darrel Royal Stadium.

I see two kinds of cranberry sauce, deviled eggs, dressing, Orange Whip, green bean casserole, turkey, sweet potatoes, and--a Thanksgiving first--Fritos, bean dip, and what looks like pita chips in front of Emi. I'm guessing there's hummus out there somewhere.
